Working Children . . . .

Can we eliminate child labour? Though it is a desirable goal the fact remains that in the given socio-economic scenario that is prevalent in our country, it is virtually impossible to do away with child labour. One cannot dispute the fact that employers exploit children by paying them much less than what they would pay in adult and the future of the working children is ruined as they will not be able to attend schools and get educated for a better future.

But when one considers the economic compulsions of the families which force the children to work, one will be compelled to admit that elimination of child labour will be a distant dream as long as the socio-economic status of these families is not improved.

Child Labours in India

Realizing the harm caused by child labour, the Indian Government made laws to protect children from exploitation at work and to improve their working condition. Besides, a comprehensive law called Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act. 1986, was promulgated to prohibit employment of children in certain hazardous occupations and processes.

In 1987, the Indian government formulated National Police on Child Labour to protect the interests of children and focus on general development programmes for the benefit of children. As a part of this policy National Child Labour Projects have been set up in different parts of the country to rehabilitate child labour. Under these projects, special schools are established to prove non-formal education, vocational training, supplementary nutrition etc. to children who are withdrawn from employment.

Though elimination of child labour is an impossible task in the current socio-economic scenario, the Indian government is committed to the task of ensuring that no child remains illiterate, hungry and without medical care. When this ideal will be achieved is a million dollar question.

The development countries are exerting pressure on developing countries like India to eliminate child labour. According to the current thinking the developed countries may stop imports of those goods that involve child labour in their production. In some of our cottage industries like making of carpets, children are employed in larger numbers. These carpets, which are being exported, may soon lose their market abroad if the producers of these carpets persist with child labour.

Child labour is, no doubt, an evil that should be done away with at the earliest. The prevalence of child labour reflects very badly on society that is not able to stop this evil. But in a society where many households may have to suffer the pangs of hunger if the children are withdrawn from work, beggars can’t be choosers. These families have to send their children to work, even if the future of these innocents is ruined, as that is the only choice open for them to survive in this world. Therefore, unless the socio-economic status of the poor families is improved, India has to live with child labour.

Indian Education System

"Our indian education system leaves a lot to be desired. Some days ago, there was fire in my college due to some mishap (Thanks god the fire was not big). There was a fire extinguisher in the room but no-one tried to use it to kill the fire instead they ran to fetch water and thus created unnecessary chaos. The reason behind not using the fire extinguisher was that no-one actually knew how to use it. I bet, everyone in the room knew the working principle of fire extinguisher but didn't knew how to make it work. Seriously, our universities ought to prepare our youth better if we are to compete on a global level in years to come."

Chances are that you too don't know how to use a fire extinguisher. But if someone asks you how a fire extinguisher works you will say fire extinguishers contain high pressure carbon dioxide in the liquid form. When this gas is suddenly released on a fire, the gas expands by a huge amount, thereby reducing its temperature. In addition, carbon dioxide is heavier than air, so it settles down. This means that fire extinguishers work by removing heat and also oxygen supply to the fire, and thus they are effective in extinguishing fires. Wow, nice to know that youth of India are now intelligent enough to tell the working principle of a fire extinguisher. But should I really be proud of this??? I don't think so.

Are there problems in our education system?

Oh hell, YES. Our education system itself is a problem. 

People say they are educated they have knowledge, but what's the point in having knowledge if we can't use it on time? 

Actually the fault is not ours, its our education system that is to be held responsible. Schools are provided with books and a syllabus that is to be completed in a year. And so teachers are always in a hurry to finish the course in time. And the greatest problem is that every parent wants a engineer or a doctor in the house as if there is no more profession left in this damn world. For this, child has to get good marks in exam. Teachers want marks, parents want marks, everyone want marks. Now if this is everything that everyone wants then why not the child want marks?

So, now getting marks is the only trend in schools and colleges. Children now mug up things instead of understanding them. This is because if they mug up things then only thing they will have to do in exam is to vomit out everything they mugged up from the book. And thus they learn a lot of things but never learn to apply them. An example of this you read in first paragraph of this post. 

Focus is just to mug and score, not to design, innovate or do something out of the box. This attitude, is lacking even in the premier institutes like the IITs. We never try to do anything new. When we are given projects what do we do? Download a copy from internet or just borrow one from any senior. No-one is bothered to play a fair game. Now, this is what our education system is giving us. Nothing...

Ethics are not taught at all! At least in my school, I have never witnessed anything promoting ethical values. I have seen people getting happy just because they ran out of the coffee shop without paying bills (I used to, I no more do so). I have seen people breaking test tubes and beakers just for fun! I have seen ‘teachers’ indulging in mal-practices. We say we are more ethical than the Western countries. Really? Are we? I believe we really need something like the NRCVEE, that needs to be properly developed and taken up seriously.

What can we do now?

We are never late for anything. We can still change the things. First of all teachers should teach how to apply things not only force students to mug up the things. Secondly, parents should not force their ward to become only engineers or doctors. They should let their children decide what they want to be. Thirdly, government should try to learn from education systems of other developed nations. They should run awareness programs for parents to let them know other scopes of job according to talents of their wards. Fourthly, children should not run only behind the marks, they should try to enhance and improve the thing they are good at. 

If we are able to do these little things then we will get real intelligent youth for India and not donkeys . . .

What is corruption ???

Corruption is one challenge being encountered by many nations in the world today. Good Governance would only prevail when the world comes to understand that ‘corruption’ needs only one man to soil an entire nation and therefore take a stand against it. It will only take one man to make our world today a better place for habitation if we have to live and practice good governance for a free and just society. Individuals, people and countries yell for transparency and accountability but in this effort, how far have we gone ??? Nowhere . . .

Is our education system to be blamed for corruption in the country ???

The curriculum taught does it have enough moral values or the students taking Moral Lesson classes just taking it as formality or is the education system in itself which doesn’t allow the future generation to develop right attitude.

The student’s concern is primarily focused on getting the marks because he wants to prove to his/her parents, to teachers and to the world, and in doing so the sore understanding of the principal behind the subjects is often forgotten, which ultimately leads to taking of shortcuts.

This foundation of shortcuts in schools and colleges teaches the student to take half measures in real life when he/she has come out of education system, now to get a job he bribes someone, to get a admission in higher education she bribes someone and the first floor of corruption is build.

We know that once a foundation is laid and first floor builded its relatively easy to take a further steps for the other floors of building and the result is a nation full of these corrupt buildings.

Is it time for us to check our education system and find out the flaws and rectify them for a corruption free nation.

WHY CORRUPTION IN INDIA AT SUCH A HIGH RATE ???

Corruption we all know is not good and we also know that India has been ranked 87th by Transparency International in its Annual Report of 2010.

Is it because we are always in rush, busy in life and want the things at faster pace or we are so used to adopting negatives measures that we don’t see that poison of corruption is spreading so rapidly that one day it may damage the Nation to the extent from where we may not rise again.

Is it because every one wants fast money, lavish life, fancy cars and dream houses or we have lost the moral values as a society ?

We are wasting huge natural resources because of corruptible practices, Jungles are converted into industrial areas , farms into society buildings, the farmers are paid peanuts and builders enjoy the high returns !!!

Who is to be blamed for it ???

Are we right in blaming the politicians only for corruption in the country ?
or we the people of this great nation to be blamed for it ?

If the common man decides that he wont encourage and support corruption.

If he decides that no more bribery to the traffic police when he himself has broken the law by jumping a red light, honestly admits a penalty notice, the policeman would know that they have to change and say no to bribery.

When the police will decide that they will work honestly the smugglers and thief would be arrested and detained, not left after taking a heavy sum on money, than the smugglers would get a message for time to change and follow the right path.

Now when there would be no black money and only white money- politicians would not need a Swiss Account and big scams.

Now What ???

In a tight alleyway in East Delhi, Radhika Devi, a bashful mother of two girls, and Manjula Thomas, a health worker who cares for pregnant women, rush to an ultrasound clinic. Devi is five months pregnant and desperately wants to know the sex of her unborn child.

"It's better if it's a boy," Devi said, her hands shaking nervously. "If it's a girl, we will get it aborted."

Devi, her husband, Radheshyam Devi, and their two daughters share a single room in the congested, mostly lower-class neighborhood of Khichripur. He brings home less than $2 a day as a bus driver -- barely enough to put food on their table -- and they worry about marrying off their two young daughters.

"All girls' parents must pay dowries," Radhika Devi said. "We will take loans and pay it back bit by bit. It might take up to a year's time."

Though dowries are illegal in India, the law is widely ignored and the Devis fear that a third daughter will send them over the edge financially. Instead, they hope for a son to one day provide for the family. He would fetch his own dowry upon marriage, take care of his parents as they grow old (India has no social security program) and carry on the family name.

In India's male-dominated society, especially in the northwest, this logic is one reason parents abort an estimated half-million female fetuses each year. The practice, called female feticide, has been responsible for at least 10 million female abortions since 1985, according to a controversial study published in January in the Lancet, the British medical journal.

"All kinds of famines, epidemics and wars are nothing compared to this," said Punit Bedi, a New Delhi gynecologist. "In some parts of India, one in every five girls is being eliminated at the fetal stage. It is a genocidal situation."

Abortion -- legal in India since 1971 -- originally was trumpeted as a way to control the country's rapidly expanding population, now about 1.1 billion people, making it the second most populous country in the world, after China.

"It was understood that all programs [to control the population] were failing because people would not stop having children until they had at least two boys," Bedi said. "Even one was not considered enough in a country where you cannot ensure childhood survival beyond 60 percent."

In 1994, under pressure from a coalition of activists, the Indian government changed course, outlawing the use of ultrasound machines to reveal fetus gender. In 2002, the penalties were stiffened: up to three years in jail and a $230 fine for the first offense and five years imprisonment and $1,160 for the second.

Aborting a child because of its gender has never been legal, but experts said doctors still act with impunity.

"It's a very low-risk, high-profile business," Bedi said. "Not only do the doctors make a lot of money, they are absolutely sure they will not be caught."

In Punjab, a state with the most disparate gap between boys and girls in India, only one doctor has been convicted in the past four years of performing a sex-selective abortion, according to V.K. Goyal, a senior Punjabi health official. The convicted doctor's medical license was suspended for five years and he was fined 400 rupees, about $10.

The Lancet study seemed to confirm that laws were not deterring families from sex selection. By analyzing national birth records and fertility histories from a 1998 Indian government survey of 1 million households, the study estimated that at least 500,000 female fetuses in 1997 were aborted. Based on that one year, they came to the 10 million figure.

The study also found that families whose first child was a girl were 30 percent less likely overall to produce another girl. And if the mothers had at least a 10th-grade education, the gap was twice as large as that for illiterate mothers.

"Normally in public health, the poor are worse off," said Prabhat Jha, an epidemiology professor at the University of Toronto and lead author of the Lancet study. "But here we have the rich and educated that are more often performing sex selections. And that is entirely consistent with being able to afford and have access to ultrasound technology."

Indeed, the drive for male heirs has created an explosion in ultrasound clinics that can determine the sex of a fetus and in medical practices that profit mostly from doing sex-selective abortions, activists said. A new ultrasound machine costs $5,000, a used one as little as $2,000, and banks eagerly provide loans, according to Bedi.

Doctors collect $80 to $230 for an ultrasound-plus-abortion package, health officials said. Though precise numbers are hard to come by, experts estimate the business to be worth $100 million to $200 million a year in India.

When Punjab's first ultrasound clinic opened in 1979, there were 925 girls for every 1,000 boys younger than 7, according to Sabu George, a public health activist who has criticized feticide for more than 20 years. By 1991, it was 875, and by 2001, it had plummeted again, to 793, according to national census figures.

But attitudes are changing in some communities in India.

In Kajampur, a small village in central Punjab, girls and boys have been born in equal numbers for several years now.

"People here aren't worried about carrying on the family name or paying dowries for daughters," said Mohinder Singh, the proud uncle of a new baby girl. "Due to education in the schools, our thinking has changed."

Students at the College for Girls in Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab, also are rejecting old ideas.

"In my personal view, a female is as capable as a male. I would not make a distinction whether I had a son or a daughter," said Georgia Georg, a 19-year-old psychology major from the southern state of Kerala. "Kids are in the hands of God."

Child Marriage - The Evil Still Prevails . . . . :-(

15 minute ago I wished a girl her 18th birthday and 13 minutes ago I came to know the dark fact that she was married one year ago at age of 17 :-( . Believe that ? ? ? Year 2012 and still this evil deed of marrying up girls at their amateur age is carried on shamelessly. I don't understand why do the parents have to do such thing to their girls ? ? ?

I don't know what's the problem with those mothers and fathers who give away their daughters to the f**king butchers who are ever ready to cut them in pieces for some money or just marry them for fullfiling their outbound lust. Sorry for the rude words, but that's what I think . . . Even if the guy marrying the girl is good but then too there are many more problems . .

Have you ever thought what the girl is sacrificing when marring a guy much more older and mature than her ? ? ? Even if the guy is not older than her and is of her age then what do you think will keep their relation intact ? ? ? They have to be mature to keep relation going for whole life. The parents should think once that they are giving their child to someone forever and it is necessary for her to be mature to keep herself safe in that unknown place where she is going.

Now, the government has done whatever it can do to swipe away this evil from India but this has already spread up its root deep in minds of rural people of India who still give away their girl for marriage quite happily. Now government can't do any thing more for this, now its our turn. We should spread this message to a great scale, and try to change this situation and drive away this evil from India . . .
